Wilmots refusing to look past Sweden
20/06/2016Belgium coach Marc Wilmots insists his side still have plenty of work to do as they try to beat Sweden to guarantee their place in the knockout stages at Euro 2016.
Wilmots’ side were well below their best against Italy in their 2-0 defeat but they bounced back on Saturday against Ireland.
Everton striker Romelu Lukaku scored a brace and Axel Witsel also got on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win over Martin O’Neill side.
The win moved Belgium up into second in Group E but they still sit just two points above Sweden. Other results could still see them finish bottom and Wilmots has admitted his side must not switch off.
He told reporters: “We’re not yet qualified. We have a difficult game to play against Sweden and it’s like a final. Anything could happen.”
The 47-year-old was also quick to praise Lukaku after his goalscoring exploits on Saturday, just days after he was criticised for his performance against the Azzurri.
Both Lukaku and Kevin de Bruyne hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons but Wilmots was proud of their response. He added: “I bluffed.
But the players were aware of it. Our line-up was the right line-up today. “With Romelu Lukaku we wanted to give somebody some confidence. “He played a great game. When he missed one opportunity against Italy, people were saying it’s all different. I just needed to make sure I trusted him.”
Belgium are the 1.80 favourites to win on Tuesday, with the draw 3.50, while Sweden are priced at odds of 4.33.
