Uncertainty not an issue for McGovern

Hamilton goalkeeper Michael McGovern says he will not let the current uncertainty over his future hamper him as he prepares for Northern Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign.

The stopper has been outstanding for Accies this season and, with his contract set to expire in the summer, is believed to be interesting both Aberdeen and Rangers, while he could also remain at New Douglas Park.

His club form has seen him overtake veteran Roy Carroll in the international pecking order and he now looks set to start for his country at their first major tournament for 30 years.

Michael O’Neill’s men have been drawn in Group C alongside Germany, Poland and Ukraine and are currently 29.00 outsiders to progress.

They open their campaign on June 12 against Poland in Nice, a game they are 4.20 to win, with the draw 3.25 and the Poles 1.80.

McGovern’s form will be key to their chances of causing any upsets although he could be set to line up in France without a contract for next season.

The 31-year-old has already said he is happy to wait for the best deal to come along and is confident any uncertainty over his future will not hamper his performances.

“I just took a stance that I was going to wait until the end of the season,” McGovern said. “Obviously I’m ambitious and I want to play at as high a level as I can.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time (at the club) so it’s something I’m going to wait and see at the end of the season and see how I go.

“I suppose it might be nicer to have things sorted before them (the Euros). But I’m comfortable going there and hopefully playing in the team and going and enjoying the experience.”
