Silva hoping to be fit

Spain midfielder David Silva has played down fears over his current injury and hopes to be fit to feature in their opening Euro 2016 game against the Czech Republic.

Silva has struggled with injuries over the last few seasons and continued to be affected during the 2015-16 campaign.

The Manchester City playmaker missed the last three weeks for his club after being ruled out with ankle and hamstring problems.

Reports have claimed the former Valencia man may not recover ahead of the start of Spain’s defence of their European Championship crown. However, the 30-year-old, who has been receiving intensive deep tissue massage, is hoping to be ready in time for La Roja’s opening game.

Silva said: “I’m fine. I hope to reach the first game. I’m not sure but the feelings I have are good.” Spain, who are 6.50 to win Euro 2016, kick-off their tournament against the Czechs on June 13 before taking on Turkey and Croatia in Group D. Silva currently has 96 caps and so could reach his century at the tournament, something he admits would be a milestone.

He added: “I am thrilled to be close to 100. Reaching that figure would be very nice.” City have already confirmed that Silva will be granted an additional three weeks off when Spain are finished at Euro 2016, as they look to ensure he has the opportunity to fully rest ahead of Pep Guardiola’s first campaign in charge.
