Sigurdsson wants enjoyable Euro campaign

Gylfi Sigurdsson insists there is no pressure on Iceland at Euro 2016 ahead of Tuesday’s Group F opener against Portugal in St Etienne.

Iceland surprised many by making it through their qualifying group that included the Czech Republic, Turkey, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and Latvia. Lars Lagerback’s men finished second in the standings – winning six, drawing two and losing two – and they were impressive in both attack and defence, scoring 17 and conceding six. Sigurdsson was key member of the first team throughout the 10 matches, ending as the top goalscorer in the group after netting five times.

The Swansea City midfielder, who is being linked with an exit from the Emirates this summer, now believes his side can enjoy themselves at the tournament, having already surpassed expectations. “We haven’t really set ourselves any targets. We’re in a tough group and the biggest achievement for us was to get there,” he told reporters.

“So we will enjoy it, hopefully get a good start to the Euros and do as well as possible.” Iceland are seen as the outsiders to defeat Portugal at 7.00, a draw is priced 3.80 while Cristiano Ronaldo’s team are the firm 1.57 favourites. The Portuguese do have one big injury concern ahead of the clash with Ricardo Quaresma struggling because of a muscular injury recently picked up.

Austria take on Hungary in the other Group F clash earlier on Tuesday in what is expected to be a tough opener for Bernd Storck’s men.

The latter are 5.25 to pick up a surprise win, the draw is a 3.50 chance while the Austrians, captained by Leicester City’s Christian Fuchs, are quoted 1.73.
