Sigurdsson excited for England clash
24/06/2016Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson believes his side has an advantage over England in the last 16 at Euro 2016 because all the pressure is on Roy Hodgson’s side as they are expected to go through.
Swansea star Sigurdsson played his part as Iceland qualified for the last 16 in France thanks to a late winner against Austria on Wednesday.
Striker Arnor Ingvi Traustason stepped off the bench to ensure Iceland picked up a 2-1 win and their reward is now a clash against the Three Lions on Monday in Nice.
England are expected to progress, but their second-placed finish in Group B has put plenty of pressure on Hodgson and his players.
The former West Brom, Fulham and Liverpool manager’s decision to rest six players against Slovakia was heavily criticised and Sigurdsson believes the media attention on England will play into his country’s hands.
“We have no pressure on us, that’s the main thing,” he told reporters. “If you look at England, if they were to lose to us there will he headlines back in England. “We are just here to enjoy the tournament and the last 16. It’s an amazing feeling and we just want to keep going. We are aware that we are probably the second team everyone supports in the tournament.”
“We are a small nation that nobody expects anything of so we want to keep those people happy and go a little bit further in the tournament. We are the same size as Coventry. Is it Leicester? We are still underdogs.”
England can be backed at odds of 1.50 to win, with the draw priced at 3.50, while Iceland are the heavy outsiders at odds of 8.00.
