Shearer tips Kane to claim Euro 2016 Golden Boot

Former England striker Alan Shearer has tipped Harry Kane to finish as the leading goalscorer at this summer’s European Championships.

The Tottenham forward has been in prolific form for club and country this season, scoring over 30 goals during the campaign, and he will head into his first major international tournament brimming with confidence.

No Englishman has finished as the top scorer at a major international competition since former Newcastle forward Shearer at Euro 96, but he believes there is no reason why Kane cannot replicate his achievement at this summer’s finals in France.

When asked if Kane can win the Golden Boot, Shearer said: “There’s no reason why not. The form Harry Kane’s in, I’m sure that’s what he’s looking to do.

When I spoke to him his answer was the same and why not? He has the ability, he’s had a fantastic season.”

Shearer concedes that Kane may not receive the same service as he did 20 years ago and he believes the Three Lions will have to reach at least the semi-finals if the 22-year-old is to have a chance of topping the charts.

He continued: “Whether he will receive the same great service I had remains to be seen – that and how far England can go.

They’re going to have to get to at least the semi-finals for him to have a chance of getting the Golden Boot. Everyone will have to be on top form for England to get there.”

Kane is available at 17.00 to finish the tournament as the leading goalscorer, while England are on offer at 9.00 to claim their first major international honour since the 1966 World Cup.
