Shearer feels England lack experience to win Euro 2016

Former striker Alan Shearer has dismissed England’s chances of winning Euro 2016 this summer.

Shearer, now a television pundit, feels Roy Hodgson’s squad lacks the experience for the big occasion although he expects them to improve on their poor World Cup showing in 2014.

England failed to get out of the group stage in Brazil, losing out to Italy and Uruguay.

Hodgson has turned things around in the interim, with the Three Lions winning all 10 games in European Championship qualifying.

However, Shearer does not feel that form will be good enough to lead England to Euro 2016 glory.

“I don’t think we’ll win it,” Shearer told the Daily Star. “I think we’ll improve on our last major tournament, but I don’t think we’ll have enough to win.”

The likes of Harry Kane, Ross Barkley and Dele Alli are figuring strongly for their respective Premier League clubs this season and could help form a new-look England side compared to the team that featured in Brazil.

Newcastle legend Shearer feels Hodgson is starting to blend together a team that will serve England well in the future but, for now, he thinks the European Championship will come too soon.

“I don’t think we have the players yet. We don’t have the experience,” he added. “We’ve got some good young prospects. If they gain from this experience that might stand us in good stead.”

England begin their Group B campaign against Russia on June 11 before a clash with neighbours Wales five days later. They conclude their group-stage campaign against Slovakia on June 20.

England are 13.00 to win Euro 2016, with tournament hosts France priced at 4.00 and world champions Germany 4.33.
