Shawcross not expecting England call

Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross is not expecting to earn a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2016.

The 28-year-old has only made one appearance for the Three Lions to date, and that came in November 2012 when he struggled to cope with the threat of Zlatan Ibrahimovic during a 4-2 defeat to Sweden.

The former Manchester United player has been consistently linked with a recall to the international fold since that match, but he is yet to add to his solitary cap, leading him to believe that he is very unlikely to earn a late call-up to the squad for this summer’s European Championships.

When asked about his chances Shawcross said: “I think that ship’s sailed now.”

The centre back has had his fair share of injury problems this season, although he still believes he has been in good form, but he is convinced that he will not earn a recall to the squad even if he continues to impress during the remaining weeks of the campaign.

He added: “My form’s been great this season – although I’ve had injuries. But I very much doubt I’ll be involved with England, even if I have a good game on Monday.”

Should Shawcross earn a surprise recall into the Three Lions squad, then he would come up against Russia, Wales and Slovakia in Group B at the finals.

England are available at 1.80 to finish top of the group, while they are on offer at 1.08 to qualify for the knockout stages.
