Semi-finals the target for Del Bosque

Vicente del Bosque has targeted a semi-final place for Spain at his summer’s Euro 2016 tournament.

La Roja are looking to make it a hat-trick of consecutive European Championship titles after they claimed glory in both 2008 and 2012.

Since then they have fallen at the group stage of the 2014 World Cup and have seen key players such as Xavi, Carles Puyol and David Villa retire from international duty.

Del Bosque has spent the last couple of years trying to introduce a number of new faces to his squad and despite topping their qualifying group, their campaign did not come without its difficulties.

Spain are currently 6.50 to win Euro 2016 and are the 1.40 favourites to top Group D which also includes Croatia, Turkey and the Czech Republic.

The tournament in France will be Del Bosque’s last in charge after he announced his intention to step down after eight years in the role.

Another success would mark a fitting end to his tenure but the 65-year-old is remaining coy on his team’s chances of winning Spain’s fourth European crown.

The former Real Madrid boss says he would be satisfied with a last-four appearance later in the summer.

Speaking on El partido de las 12 via network COPE, he said: “If we make the semi-finals I would be happy, I’m telling you the truth. Even though some would consider not winning it a failure.”

Spain open their campaign on March 13 against the Czechs in Toulouse and are 1.53 to win the game, with the draw 3.75 and Pavel Vrba’s men are 6.50.
