Ozil hoping to see Gomez in squad

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has admitted that he would like to see striker Mario Gomez included in the Germany squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Germany, priced at 4.50 to win Euro 2016, will take on Northern Ireland, Ukraine and Poland in France later this year.

Coach Joachim Low decided to call up Gomez for Germany’s recent international friendlies against England and Italy.

He scored his first Germany goal since 2012 against England and could have added another but for the offside flag.

The 30-year-old was not used in the 4-1 win over Italy but Ozil is adamant that the squad could do with a striker of his quality at the tournament.

Ozil told Fanatik: “We really need a striker like Mario Gomez in the European Championship side he would be a major boost.

“We were all really pleased with Mario returning to the national team.”

The former Stuttgart and Bayern Munich forward is currently on loan at Turkish Super League side Besiktas.

Gomez has already scored 21 goals for the league leaders since been allowed to leave Fiorentina on loan in 2015.

His form earned him a recall but there are still doubts about whether he will make Low’s squad for Euro 2016.

Thomas Muller, Mario Gotze, Lukas Podolski and Kevin Volland have all been used before by Low but Gomez will be confident of adding to his tally before the end of the campaign.
