O’Neill focused on Euro 2016
12/05/2016Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill is refusing to respond to speculation linking him with the Celtic job as he tries to enjoy Euro 2016 this summer.
O’Neill is one of many names linked with the role, after Ronny Deila confirmed he would leave at the end of the season.
The likes of Roy Keane and David Moyes have been linked but O’Neill’s achievements on the international stage has helped his chances.
He has guided Northern Ireland to their first major tournament since the 1996 World Cup and the former winger is adamant that the European Championships are his main objective.
“I think part of (being linked with the Celtic job) comes down to the fact that I live in Scotland,” he told Sky Sports Now. “There are a number of names that have been linked with that job and it is a fantastic job. “I felt that the right thing to do for me was to commit to Northern Ireland leading into the finals and I don’t want to do anything to take that special relationship away. “I don’t think it would have been possible for me to have that something in the back of my mind and be focused on making sure we do well.
“It’s been 30 years since we’ve been there and I want it to be a positive experience for me, for the country, for everyone. “If we perform well, it will enhance my reputation and then we’ll see what happens after that.”
Northern Ireland have been drawn in Group C alongside Germany, Ukraine and Poland and O’Neill’s men are priced at 3.50 to qualify.
