O’Neill eyes Northern Ireland history

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has urged his players to go and make history as they try to get a result against Germany and qualify for the knockout stage of Euro 2016.

O’Neill’s men sit third in Group C after one defeat and one win so far but their biggest test comes on Tuesday night.

They fell to a 1-0 defeat to Poland in their first game but then responded with a 2-0 win over Ukraine.

A win in Paris will guarantee Northern Ireland a place in the last 16 while they could still progress if they lose or draw against the reigning world Champions.

Northern Ireland are playing in their first major tournament in 30 years and O’Neill is confident his team can continue their solid run and make more memories for fans.

The 46-year-old told reporters: “I don’t think there’s any tension. I think this is a special moment. “If you’d offered us the chance to play the world champions in Paris where a victory could mean that we would possibly win the group, I think we’d have happily taken that. “This is an opportunity for all of us to enjoy and savour. When we look back on our careers, hopefully it’ll be something that sticks in the memory for a long time.”

“To make that even more memorable, we have to obviously try and get a result and get to the next phase of the tournament. It’s as simple as that.” Northern Ireland are 13.00 to win, with the draw 4.75. Germany are the heavy favourites at 1.30.
