Nainggolan suffers injury scare

23/05/2016

Belgium midfielder Radja Nainggolan will miss the next two weeks of action after suffering a small tear in his calf muscle.

The Roma midfielder featured in all but one of the Red Devils’ 10 matches during qualifying for the finals, as he has established himself as an integral part of Marc Wilmots’ squad since missing out on selection for the 2014 World Cup.

The injury is not expected to effect the 28-year-old’s participation at this summer’s finals, but he will now definitely miss the next two warm-up matches against fellow Euro 2016 finalists Switzerland in Geneva on Saturday and Finland in Brussels on June 1.

Nainggolan could return to action for Belgium’s final warm-up match against Norway on June 5, with their Euro 2016 campaign set to begin eight days later with a game against Italy at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Belgium have also added Montreal Impact defender Laurent Ciman to their squad ahead of the finals, as their injury crisis in defence begins to deepen.

Captain Vincent Kompany has already been ruled out of the tournament with a groin injury, while there are doubts over Club Bruges defensive pair Bjorn Engels and Thomas Meunier.

Wilmots has until May 31 to confirm his final 23-man squad for the tournament, with the Red Devils also set to face the Republic of Ireland and Sweden in Group E of the competition.

Belgium are available at 2.00 to finish top of the group, while they are priced at 1.14 to advance through to the knockout stages.
