More injury misery for Belgian skipper Kompany

17/03/2016

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany is facing yet another spell on the sidelines with his troublesome calf.

The centre-back limped out early during Man City’s Champions League
last-16 stalemate with Dynamo Kiev at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

The game finished scoreless but it was enough for Manchester City to take their spot in the quarter finals of Europe’s elite competition for the first time nonetheless.

The progress came at a cost, with both Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi forced off injured in the first half.

Kompany was suffering a fourth recurrence of a calf problem this season and his situation will be a major worry for Belgium boss Marc Wilmots as Euro 2016 looms large on the horizon.

Kompany slipped as he challenged Kiev midfielder Vitaliy Buyalskiy and he quickly put out the distress signal before trudging off down the tunnel.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini fears the 29-year-old will be staring at another month on the treatment table.

“Vincent, unfortunately, has a muscle injury in his calf like he had before,” he said. “We’ll know more Wednesday or maybe Thursday how important it is, but always a muscle injury is minimum of one month.”

Kompany had only recently returned to action having been laid up since late December.

The latest setback will come as a blow to Wilmots, who would have been hoping his captain might have achieved a run of games to leave him fighting fit for Euro 2016 this June.

The Red Devils open their campaign in France against Italy on June 13 in Lyon.

Belgium are 11.00 to win Euro 2016 while they are 2.00 to win Group E, where they also face Sweden and Republic of Ireland.
