Ledley deserves Euros spot – Williams

30/05/2016

Wales captain Ashley Williams believes that Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley fully deserves his place in the squad for Euro 2016 despite an injury setback.

Ledley’s chances of earning a spot in Chris Coleman’s 23-man squad for France this summer look limited after he suffered a horrible injury in the penultimate game of the Premier League campaign.

The 29-year-old broke his leg and although his fibula fracture is a minor one, there are still doubts over his fitness ahead of Euro 2016.

The midfielder is currently with the Wales squad at a pre-tournament training camp in Portugal and was able to take part in a light training session earlier this week.

Coleman has admitted he is still not sure whether to include the Crystal Palace man in his final squad, but conceded it is a big decision which must be made before the final deadline at the end of this month.

Williams will captain Wales, who are priced at 5.50 to win Group B, and believes that Ledley should get the nod even if he doesn’t get the chance to make it on to the field.

The Swansea defender feels that Ledley is a massive part of the squad and deserves to be in France this summer.

Williams said: “He deserves to be there, even if he doesn’t make it on to the pitch. It was disappointing for him to miss the FA Cup final but we didn’t expect him to be running and doing the work he is already.

“Seeing what he can do I would expect him to be alright but he deserves to be in and around the team as he is a big personality in the camp. “He’s the joker who makes it easier for everyone.”
