Judge suffers Euro heartache

Brentford midfielder Alan Judge looks set to miss this summer’s European Championships after fracturing his lower leg on Saturday.

The Republic of Ireland international suffered the injury during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Ipswich in the Championship.

Judge started the game but was taken off on a stretcher after just two minutes following a challenge from Luke Hyam.

Hyam was only booked for the tackle but he then picked up another card later on in the game and was sent off later. Judge, who started last month’s 1-0 friendly win for Ireland against Switzerland, now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Brentford confirmed on Saturday night that he had fractured his leg, but the Bees have yet to confirm when he will be back playing.

A statement read: “During today’s Sky Bet Championship game against Ipswich Town, Alan Judge sustained a fracture injury to his lower leg.

“The injury was assessed and immobilised locally and Alan has now been transferred to a London hospital where he will be managed by the leading lower limb consultant in the country.

“The nature of his management and long-term prognosis cannot be speculated on at this time, however it should be stated that a full recovery is not in question.

“Alan and his family will receive our fullest support and further comment will be provided as we’re able to over the coming days.”

Judge’s injury is a blow to Ireland boss Martin O’Neill but he still has the likes of Harry Arter, Jeff Hendrick and Stephen Quinn all fighting for a place in his squad for the Euros.
