Jones – Coleman deal is huge boost

Former Wales midfielder Owain Tudur Jones is adamant that the squad will be boosted at Euro 2016 if Chris Coleman signs a new deal.

The former Fulham boss is set to be rewarded in the coming days after weeks of speculation. Coleman’s current deal expires after Euro 2016 and he has enjoyed a solid four years in charge after he became the national boss in January 2012.

He has guided Wales to their first major finals since the 1958 World Cup and reports suggest he will now sign a two-year extension. The 45-year-old was linked with the exit door a few weeks ago, with reports suggesting he could not agree a new deal with the Welsh FA.

However, they’re expected to announce his new deal on Monday, just weeks ahead of the European Championships. Speaking about the new contract, Jones admits the players will be boosted as they try to qualify from Group B.

“It is vitally important,” Jones told BBC Sport. “It will give a boost to the playing squad… Knowing that the manager is going to be the same guy going into the next campaign. “It is important [and] it’s nice that Chris Coleman has been rewarded for his hard work and the success that he has had in getting the team over to France for the Euros.

“It’s a nice thought that both parties have been able to settle.” Wales have been drawn in Group B alongside England, Slovakia and Russia and they can be backed at odds of 5.50 to finish top.
