Hungary determined to build on shock victory

Forwards Tamas Priskin and Krisztian Nemeth want more of the same from Hungary after they stunned neighbours Austria to win their opening Euro 2016 clash in Bordeaux.

Bernd Storck’s side had gone into the game as underdogs, with Hungary widely expected to struggle in Group F which also contains the Austrians, Portugal and Iceland.

Second-half goals from Adam Szalai and Zoltan Stieber gave Hungary a deserved success, with Austria finishing the game with 10 men following a second booking for Aleksandar Dragovic shortly after Szalai had opened the scoring.

While elated with the victory, Priskin was quick to rally the troops and call for more of the same against Iceland in Marseille on Saturday.

With tournament debutants Iceland having held Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their clash in Saint Etienne on Tuesday night, Hungary know victory on Saturday would guarantee a coveted place in the last 16. “It was a great night for us. I am very happy we won the game and scored two nice goals, we have to continue on this way on Saturday,” said the Slovan Bratislava player.

“It was very special to be here, but it is more special now we have won a game. Everyone is very happy but we have to be concentrated on Saturday, and hopefully we can win that and qualify.”

Fellow forward Nemeth conceded that few people outside of the Hungarian camp would have expected an opening win in Group F against their neighbours.

“The team believed. In the end, we deserved to win,” said Nemeth. “We have worked a lot in the few weeks we have had together, we have done very well, and we have all the information for what we need for this game. We tried to qualify for the next round, that is the target from the beginning, and now we are closer. Not a bad start.” Hungary are 2.63 to qualify from Group F.
