Hodgson refusing to rule out Shaw
28/03/2016England manager Roy Hodgson has refused to give up hope that Luke Shaw could play at this summer’s Euro 2016 finals.
The Manchester United star broke his leg at the start of the campaign during a UEFA Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven.
The extent of the injury caused many to rule him out of the entire season, but Shaw is now making good progress behind the scenes.
Shaw, who has made six appearances for England, could make his return before the summer as he tries to help the Red Devils climb into the top four.
The 20-year-old has had two operations to correct the problem and Hodgson expects him to be fit before the end of the season, although he has admitted United may have other ideas.
Hodgson said: “Luke’s in the same position as Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere.
“Luke Shaw’s a player we believe in, we think is an excellent talent.
We think he will be a major competitor with the other left-backs for a place in the squad. All that remains is for him to get fit enough to be selected.
“I spoke to Luke on Sunday and he said to me that things are going well and that’s good news. We’re in the hands of the club, to some extent.
“If they decide they don’t want to risk him in the final games, they do want to hold him back, they want to give him a pre-season to get
100 per-cent fit, there’s not much I can do.”
The former Liverpool boss will name his squad for the finals on May 12 and Shaw will be hoping he can help his country, currently priced at
11.00 to win Euro 2016, in France.
