Hodgson hoping to remain grounded
28/03/2016England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that Saturday’s 3-2 win over Germany was his finest night as the national boss but admits he wants his players to remain grounded.
The Three Lions, now priced at 9.00 to win Euro 2016, trailed 2-0 in Berlin following goals from Toni Kroos and Mario Gomez. England were unfortunate to fall behind with an injury to goalkeeper Jack Butland helping Germany’s cause for the opener.
However, Tottenham forward Harry Kane pulled a goal back in the second half thanks to a brilliant Cruyff turn and shot inside the area before substitute Jamie Vardy levelled matters with a delightful flick after a fine team move.
Defender Eric Dier then grabbed the winner from a corner in injury time to give England a famous victory just months ahead of Euro 2016.
England are expected to qualify from Group B at 1.08 in a group which includes Wales, Slovakia and Russia.
Despite Saturday’s win over the world champions, Hodgson is eager for his players and the fans to keep grounded.
Speaking after the match, he said: “It is a friendly game and we have got an awful long way to go before we can claim to be anything like Germany with all they have achieved.
“You always hope your best night’s ahead of you. I’m rather hoping there’ll be one of them ahead of me. But best night so far? Yes, why not. I’ll give you that one.
“We don’t want to forget that this team are a work in progress. I say again this is a friendly match and you always have to be careful how much importance you attach to them.”
