Duffy staying positive

Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy insists he will stay positive following his red card in Sunday’s last-16 defeat to France at the European Championships.

The 24-year-old made his competitive debut and earned just his fourth senior cap in the final group match against Italy at Euro 2016.

Duffy played a role in keeping the Azzurri at bay as Martin O’Neil’s men secure a 1-0 victory and subsequently sealed a place in the last 16.

However, the Blackburn Rovers man looked as though he was struggling in the knockout stages as the Republic fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of hosts France, who are priced at 5.25 to win Euro 2016 outright, in Lyon.

Robbie Brady put the underdogs ahead from the penalty spot after just two minutes but two goals from Antoine Griezmann in a four-minute spell during the second half saw the hosts progress.

The Ireland defender was then given his marching orders shortly after his side fell behind as he brought down the Atletico Madrid man as he broke through clear on goal.

However, the former Everton trainee believes he is capable of playing at the top level and insists he will learn from his mistakes.

Duffy said: “I felt like I could play at this level. I felt comfortable out there. “I feel like I have done all right, but the red card hasn’t helped me. “I have tried to make a challenge for the ball. It’s difficult because if I don’t make it or if I leave it they score. It’s football. It’s a matter of inches.”

“It’s disappointing for the way it finished for me in the second half. I’ll stay positive after it, I’ll hold my head up high after it and learn from my mistakes and try to do better next time. “It’s been a great experience for me coming in so late. To play a part is special.”
