Digne: We’re in it to win it

Having secured his spot in Didier Deschamps’ squad for Euro 2016, France defender Lucas Digne says he is determined to help Les Bleus to success on home soil.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a stellar season with Roma in Serie A and is likely to find himself duelling with veteran Patrice Evra for the left-back slot this summer.

He is determined that France can secure a third European Championship triumph with the benefit of home advantage. “I’m going to the Euros to win it,” he told Goal.

“I can only speak for myself, of course, but I go into every game to win it – as I think all footballers do. We place great expectations on ourselves just like the French people have.” Digne said getting the call for France has capped a pleasing season for himself personally and Roma as a team, while he admits playing at a major tournament for France in his native land is the stuff of dreams.

“It is a boyhood dream to be a part of Les Bleus playing such a big tournament in our own country,” he added. “I am really happy to be in the France squad. I am proud to play for my country, and it is the perfect climax to what has been a truly fantastic season for my team Roma and I.”

France will open the tournament by facing Romania in the Stade de France on June 10. Deschamps’ squad will also face Albania and Switzerland in Group A.

The tournament hosts are 4.00 to win Euro 2016, while world champions Germany are 4.50.
