Deschamps impressed by Payet

France boss Didier Deschamps has admitted midfielder Dimitri Payet deserves a place in his squad for the upcoming European Championship.

The West Ham star has grabbed the headlines this year as he tries to help his side qualify for the Champions League.

Despite his impressive form for the Hammers, Payet had to have ‘clear-the-air’ talks with Deschamps before he was called up to the France squad.

Payet insists that the discussions helped him as he impressed during the 3-2 win over the Netherlands last week.

The former Marseille star hit the post in the Amsterdam Arena and Deschamps was quick to praise him after the full-time whistle.

Payet has scored 11 goals and picked up 11 assists so far this season and Deschamps has now revealed he has a great chance of making the squad for Euro 2016.

“If I take him, it’s because I’m convinced or I think he can bring something,” he told French TV show Telefoot on Sunday. “He has a very particular style – he’s capable of making others play.

“By maintaining this standard and what he has done, it’s no longer a question of taking him to the Euros or not.”

Payet will be hoping to impress in Tuesday’s friendly against Russia at the Stade de France.

Les Bleus are 1.50 to win, the draw is 4.00 and Russia are 7.50.
