Coleman expecting tough test
24/06/2016Wales boss Chris Coleman has admitted his side will be up against it when they take on Northern Ireland in the last 16 of Euro 2016 on Saturday evening.
Wales, 5.50 to be knocked out in the semi-finals, topped Group B after beating Slovakia and Russia, while England had to settle for second despite securing a 2-1 win over Coleman’s men.
Wales were expecting to face Turkey in the last 16, but late drama in Group E changed the draw once again.
Robbie Brady’s 85th-minute winner over Italy for the Republic ensured Martin O’Neill’s men will play France, while Wales must now do battle with Michael O’Neill’s team.
Both sides were expected to struggle in the tournament but one of them will now get the chance to reach the quarter-finals and Coleman admits his side will need to dig deep if they want to continue their Euro dream.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s game at the Parc des Princes, he said: “Northern Ireland are more physical than Turkey. They get the ball forward quicker. That’s where their strength is. “They are superbly organised and defensively so difficult to break down. They are excellent from set plays.”
Coleman says his side are now back in training and focused on the task ahead after unwinding following their 3-0 win over Russia. The former Fulham boss allowed his players to relax with a beer and he believes it did his team the world of good.
He added: “It was great as we had not had a beer since we had been in camp. I didn’t have to say ‘don’t be stupid’ or anything. They took care of that. Then it was a great atmosphere at the hotel, all the kids were there. We all needed it.”
