Portugal full-back Fabio Coentrao looks set to miss Euro 2016 after sustaining a thigh injury last week.

The 28-year-old picked up the problem while training with club side Monaco and he is now set to undergo surgery to correct the injury in Finland next week.

The defender, who is on a season-long loan at Les Rouges et Blancs from Real Madrid, is expected to be out of action for between three and six months, with the Ligue 1 side confirming the news in a statement on their official website.

The statement read: “Fabio Coentrao suffered an injury to his right thigh in training last week. He is due to undergo surgery in Finland next week by Dr Sakari Orava, and is expected to be out for between three and six months.”

Coentrao has been dogged by injuries since arriving in the Principality last August, with respective thigh and foot problems limiting him to just 13 starts in Ligue 1 this season.

The left-back’s injury troubles have also limited his appearances for the national team of late and he is now expected to miss Euro 2016 due to his latest setback.

Portugal have been drawn in Group F for the competition alongside Iceland, Austria and Hungary, and they are available at 1.85 to finish top of the group, while they are on offer at 1.10 to qualify for the knock-out stages.
