Casillas unsure on Euro 2016 role

Spain captain Iker Casillas admits he does not know if he will be his country’s number one at Euro 2016.

The 35-year-old has been La Roja’s first-choice goalkeeper for over a decade, captaining them to glory at the European Championship in both 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2010 World Cup.

However, it remains unclear if he will again be given the gloves for his ninth major international tournament due to the form of David de Gea.

While it has been a difficult few years for Casillas, first at Real Madrid and now Porto, De Gea’s form for Manchester United has seen him earmarked as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Boss Vicente del Bosque is still to publically state who his number one will be in France although he could all but confirm his decision when he selects his XI for Tuesday’s friendly against Georgia.

Del Bosque usually picks his first-choice goalkeeper for his team’s final warm-up game for a tournament and, as things stand, despite being his squad’s captain, the veteran Casillas admits he does not know if he will be given the chance to add to his 167 caps.

“I don’t know, that’s the truth. I have no idea,” he is quoted as saying by AS. “Everyone here thinks and believes we can play, of course. “The 23 here are important for their clubs, starters mostly, and I think everyone who has come here believes they can help the coach, but this is a decision for him. “Even having the most years here or to have played the most European Championship finals, I have no certainty or assurance I will play this tournament.”

Spain are currently priced at 6.00 to successfully defend their title at Euro 2016, with hosts France leading the betting at 4.00 and world champions Germany 5.00.
