Carvajal forced out of Euros
01/06/2016Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has revealed his frustration after missing out on Euro 2016 through injury, while Hector Bellerin has been called up as his replacement for Spain.
Carvajal has been the preferred option of Spain boss Vicente del Bosque but will not travel to France this summer after failing to overcome an injury.
The Los Blancos man sustained a muscular injury to his right leg during Saturday’s Champions League final victory over rivals Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old looked emotional as he had to be substituted early into the second half of the game at the San Siro and it has now been confirmed that he will miss the European Championship for Spain, who are priced at 6.50 to win outright.
The defender insists he is hugely disappointed but hopes his compatriots can still defend their crown at the showpiece event. “I got injured and the only thing I can do is to wish my team-mates the best of luck,” he said.
“I feel a lot of contained rage. I fought for two years to try to make the group and I am disappointed with myself for the bad luck I’ve had. “For two weeks I had some slight pain while I was preparing for the final. I felt a pain and I was able to hold on until half-time. When the second half started, I couldn’t continue any more.
“I had to leave and I knew there and then that I would probably miss Euro 2016.” Arsenal defender Bellerin has been handed a spot in the absence of Carvajal despite only making his debut for Spain in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
