Carroll ready to adapt to international scene

West Ham striker Andy Carroll is confident he will be able to adapt his game to ensure he can make a difference if selected for England in Euro 2016.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a recall to the Three Lions squad after netting a hat-trick in Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Arsenal and although his style may not be pretty, the sizeable striker always makes life awkward for defenders.

England currently have a plethora of strikers to choose from with Wayne Rooney, Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane and Danny Welbeck seemingly certainties for Roy Hodgson’s squad.

The coach has said he would like to take five forwards to France in the summer and Carroll would certainly add an extra option.

Hodgson selected the former Liverpool man for Euro 2012 but questions could remain over whether the striker can be relied upon to remain fit, having been beset by injuries in recent years.

This time he appears to have come back fitter and sharper though and says his past experience have shown what he needs to do to thrive at the top level.

Carroll admits his abrasive style may be frowned upon in internationals but is confident that he has the skills to adapt his game to be a success if called upon by England.

“You have to be a bit more clever,” he said. “Some of the challenges and the way I throw my body around in the Premier League wouldn’t work on an international stage.

“I completely understand watching it and having been involved in it. It’s all about being clever.”

England are the 1.80 favourites to win Group B ahead of Wales, Russia and Slovakia, while they are currently priced at 9.00 to win the tournament outright.
