Can determined to feature in France

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is adamant he will be fit enough to play at Euro 2016 for Germany despite suffering a serious-looking injury last week.

Can is expected to be out for between four to six weeks after rupturing ankle ligaments towards the end of the dramatic 4-3 Europa League win over Borussia Dortmund last Thursday.

Can’s injury should see him miss the rest of the domestic campaign and he is likely to be forced to sit out the the Europa League final on May 18, should Liverpool get there.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form in recent weeks and he is, however, determined to feature for his country at the European Championships this summer.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “Obviously it was a shock and very disappointing for me.

“I am a fighter and won’t let anything get me down. I will give everything to try to be fit in time for Euro 2016, and I am optimistic about achieving my goal.”

Can’s injury will come as a blow to manager Jurgen Klopp but the former Bayer Leverkusen star insists the mood in the camp is still on a high following the dramatic win over Dortmund.

“I always struggle to sleep if I’ve played in the evening. This game was something special, though, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he added.

“Jurgen Klopp told us at half-time that we needed to believe in ourselves, and create a story we could tell our grandchildren about. And that’s what happened. I think people will be talking about this match in 10 years’ time.”
