Caldwell tips Grigg for Euros place
11/05/2016Wigan boss Gary Caldwell believes striker Will Grigg would be a huge asset if selected by Northern Ireland for Euro 2016.
The forward has been one of the driving forces behind the Latics’ successful promotion push this season, netting 25 goals as his side topped the League One standings.
However, he has not represented his country for over a year and was left out of Michael O’Neill’s last squad, as the coach thought he would be better served featuring for his club.
Grigg’s form may prove too good to ignore and the 24-year-old’s ability in the box could boost a Northern Irish team that appears to lack star quality in attack.
They have been drawn alongside Germany, Poland and Ukraine in Group B at Euro 2016 and are currently the 29.00 outsiders to top it. Caldwell believes Grigg could prove to be vital for Northern Ireland in the summer and has urged O’Neill to include the striker in his final 23-man travelling party.
“For me, he’s got to go,” Caldwell said. “He’s someone who’s in form and scoring goals. “If Northern Ireland have got better strikers than him then I’d like to see them because he is somebody that I believe can be a real asset for them at the Euros this summer.”
Northern Ireland begin their campaign on June 12 against Poland in Nice, a game they are currently 5.00 to win, with the draw 3.40 and the Poles 1.75.
