Cabaye confident of home triumph

France midfielder Yohan Cabaye is confident that his side can extend their good record in tournaments on home soil and win Euro 2016 this summer.

Les Blues, 4.00 to win Euro 2016, won the 1998 World Cup on their own turf before then going on to triumph at Euro 2000 just two years later in nearby Belgium and the Netherlands.

Since then, France have generally underwhelmed on the international stage but many are expecting them to bounce back under Didier Deschamps at home.

The blend of experience and youth has made them the favourites to win the event but Cabaye is still fighting for a first-team spot.

He is set to compete along with Dimitri Payet and N’Golo Kante for a starting role in Deschamps’ side but the Crystal Palace star is just focused on his team’s fortunes.

The former Newcastle midfielder has outlined England, Belgium, Spain and Germany as France’s main rivals but he is confident his team will be too strong.

“I think maybe Belgium, Spain and Germany [are favourites rather than France]. I don’t want to forget England as well, because England have a good young team.

Maybe they can be there for the semi or final,” he told Goal. “We play to win, we are going to work for it and we are the hosts, hopefully the fans and crowd will be with us.”

He added: “We have a good team, there are a few other good teams as well. We’re going to work and start with Romania, try and win the three games in the group stage and then play game-by-game. Our target is to go to the end and win it.”
