No Euros distraction for Heaton

Tom Heaton says he will not let the possibility of a place in England’s Euro 2016 squad distract him from helping Burnley win promotion back to the Premier League.

With five games to go, the Clarets currently sit second in the Championship, two points adrift of leaders Middlesbrough who beat Reading on Tuesday, and look on course to earn an immediate return to the top flight.

Heaton has captained the club for much of this season and, despite playing in the second tier, his performances have not gone unnoticed.

The goalkeeper was first called into the England squad in May 2015 and was again brought in for the recent friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands.

Despite still not having won a cap, the injury to Jack Butland means the 29-year-old could well be picked by boss Roy Hodgson as the Three Lions’ third-choice behind Joe Hart and Fraser Forster for this summer’s European Championships.

However, Heaton insists his main focus remains on Burnley and says he will not let a potential seat on the plane to France affect his performances.

“I was gutted for Jack, he’s a top lad and a top goalkeeper,” he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. “Whether that opens a door for me or not, we’ll have to wait and see.

“I try not to look too far ahead, I focus on playing week in, week out and putting in some good performances and the rest is up to the manager.”

Burnley are currently are 1.20 to win promotion, with them priced at 2.75 to top the final Championship standings.
